Applies to: Most gTLDs (like .com, .net, .org) after a Change of Registrant (contact/ownership update) and often right after a recent transfer.
Does not block: DNS edits, nameserver changes, renewals, or website/email hosting changes.
FAQs
What is the 60-day transfer lock?
It’s a temporary hold that prevents transferring your domain to a different registrar for 60 days. It helps protect against hijacking and mistakes right after ownership/contact changes or a recent transfer.
Why is there a lock?
Security. When contact/ownership details change, or a transfer just completed, there’s a short “cool-off” period to prevent unauthorized moves. It’s part of industry rules and best practices.
What actions trigger the lock?
Common triggers:
Change of Registrant (updating the legal owner/contact info)
A transfer just completed (moved in from another registrar)
Less common: Some registries and TLDs apply additional or different rules.
What does the lock stop—and what’s still allowed?
Stops: Moving the domain to a different registrar.
Allowed: Renewals, DNS records, nameserver changes, WHOIS/RDAP privacy, and website/email setup.
I need to move my domain sooner. Can Atom remove the lock?
Often, yes. Contact Atom Support and we’ll review your request. After quick security checks (to confirm you’re the rightful account holder and the change was intended), we may remove the lock when policy allows.
What helps us approve faster:
A brief reason (e.g., consolidating all domains at Registrar X)
Confirmation that recent contact changes were intentional
Any supporting info we ask for during verification
Does an internal “account change” (push within Atom) trigger the lock?
Account move only, same registrant: Usually no new 60-day lock.
Account move with Change of Registrant: Yes, that generally triggers the 60-day lock to other registrars.
Does this affect all TLDs?
Most gTLDs follow similar rules. Some ccTLDs and specialty TLDs have different timelines or policies. If your domain isn’t a standard gTLD, ask us—we’ll confirm the exact rule for your TLD.
Will my website or email go down because of the lock?
No. The lock only blocks inter-registrar transfers. Your site, email, nameservers, and DNS settings are unaffected.
How do I check if my domain is locked?
In your Atom dashboard, open the domain and look for Transfer status.
Or ask us—[Contact Atom Support] and we’ll confirm the status and the end date.
When does the 60-day period start and end?
It starts the day the triggering event completes (e.g., the contact change is finalized or the transfer completes) and ends 60 calendar days later. We can tell you the exact unlock date on request.
Can I opt out of the 60-day lock?
Some registrants may be eligible to opt out at the time of the Change of Registrant. If you see this option during the process and you know you’ll need to move soon, choose it. If the change is already done, contact us—we’ll review removal on a case-by-case basis.
